The kitchen

Everything begins with the fire.

Each afternoon we light split hardwood in the grill and the brick oven, then wait. Cooking starts when the flames have settled into embers: hot, steady and forgiving. It is the oldest way of cooking there is, and still the one we like best.

The menu stays short on purpose. We write it around what looks good that week from the farms, boats and gardens we can reach, and we would rather do a few things properly than many things adequately. Bread is baked in the cooling oven, and butter, pickles and ferments are made in-house.

The dining room is small, the lights are low, and there is always a candle on the table. Stay as long as the evening wants you to.

Wood and charcoal

No gas grills. Every dish from the fire is cooked on hardwood and charcoal.

Short and seasonal

A menu that fits on one page and changes when the market does.

Unhurried

Good fire takes time, and so does a good evening. We won’t rush you.

Before you come

Good to know

Dietary needs

We cook for vegetarians, vegans and gluten-free guests at every service, and the menu tags show which dishes suit. Please tell us about any allergy when you book and again at the table. Because everything shares one fire, we can’t rule out traces.

Children

Families are very welcome, especially at lunch on Saturday and Sunday. We have high chairs, small plates that suit small appetites, and a £13 children’s Sunday roast. The room is dim and candlelit after dark, so please keep little hands away from the flames.

Dogs

Well-behaved dogs are welcome at the bar tables by the door, with a bowl of water and a biscuit. If you’d like to bring yours, mention it when you book and we’ll seat you there.

Accessibility

There is a level entrance from Kiln Row, step-free access to the whole ground-floor dining room and back room, and an accessible toilet. Menus can be read aloud, or sent in large print or as text on request. Tell us what would help and we’ll set it up before you arrive.

Cancellations

Plans change. Please give us at least 24 hours’ notice to move or cancel a booking. For tables of six or more we take card details to hold the table, and may charge £15 per person for late cancellations or no-shows. Running late? Ring us; we hold tables for 15 minutes.

Timings

Tables on Friday and Saturday evenings are yours for two hours; at other times, stay as long as you like. The kitchen takes last orders an hour and a half before closing, and the bar keeps going a little after that.
